Nairobi: Your Soft Landing into East Africa
Nairobi is where most journeys into Kenya begin – and it's much more than a transit stop. It's a city of contrasts: glass towers and jacaranda-lined streets, espresso bars and nyama choma joints, rooftop cocktails and forest walks. It's also home for me: I'm a fourth-generation Kenyan who spent most of my adult life in New York before moving back, which means I see Nairobi both as a local and through the eyes of a curious visitor.
This page is designed to make Nairobi feel approachable. Think of it as a curated starting point: not a checklist, but a short list of neighborhoods, restaurants and experiences I actually send my own friends to when they visit.
How Nairobi Fits Into Your Trip
Nairobi works beautifully as a soft landing before safari, a buffer day between flights, or a city break after time in the bush or at the coast. Most Alphathesis Safaris itineraries use Nairobi in one of three ways:
- 1–2 nights on arrival to rest, reset your internal clock and enjoy good food before early bush flights.
- A city day between safari and the beach: a slow lunch, a museum or gallery, and a relaxed evening.
- A working stopover for travelers combining holiday with remote work.
A Quick Feel for Nairobi's Neighborhoods
Nairobi is a city of micro-neighborhoods. Where you stay and dine shapes how the city feels:
- Westlands & Riverside – Lively, central and restaurant-dense. Great for first-timers who want options within a short ride.
- Karen – Leafy, residential and slower-paced, close to Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen Museum.
- Lavington & Kileleshwa – Calm, upscale neighborhoods with a growing collection of cafés and restaurants.
- Gigiri & Runda – Home to embassies and the UN; green, quiet and convenient for certain itineraries.
When we design your itinerary, we'll choose a neighborhood that matches your energy level, time zone shock and next flight out.
Where to Eat & Drink in Nairobi
Nairobi's food scene has grown up a lot over the last decade. You'll find everything from Indian and Ethiopian comfort food to modern African tasting menus, rooftop sundowners and plant-forward cafés. Rather than list every place in the city, I maintain a living, curated list of spots that I actually send travelers to; and that I go to myself.
In the interactive guide below, you can filter by neighborhood, cuisine and vibe – date night, group-friendly, brunch, garden-setting, rooftop, cocktails and more.
Beyond the Plate: Culture, Nature & Slow Moments
If you have a full day or even just an afternoon, Nairobi has a few experiences that pair well with good food:
- Karura Forest – A peaceful urban forest with shaded walking trails, waterfalls and cafés. Perfect for a decompression walk after a long flight.
- Nairobi National Park – Wildlife against a city skyline. Sunrise or late afternoon game drives can be woven around your arrival or departure.
- Local markets & makers – From curated boutiques to artisan markets, there are thoughtful places to pick up pieces that feel like the city, not just souvenirs.
When we design your Nairobi time, we'll factor in how much energy you realistically have between flights and safaris, and build something that feels grounding, not rushed.
